Development Projects
After completing our research
of the above ideas, Duck Tails and Motherhood have been chosen for a further 3 weeks development in October/November 2009 with showings on 19th November at 7pm and Friday 20th at 4pm at the Playground.
Motherhood
Aims For Development Time
The various concepts of motherhood effect all of us, men and woman, whether we have children or not. They are continually shifting and incredibly powerful. I am very inspired by our mythical and archetypal images of motherhood and would like to explore them. I would like to discover how they relate to modern perceptions of motherhood and how this could be communicated theatrically.
I will begin the studio time with group reflection and analysis on the work we did previously, (4 days research), exploring any new ideas the performers have had in the interim. We will then explore new material from the narrative framework and work with the new text. During the first phase we would also explore any new ideas that arise druirng the process. The week would finish with an examination of the overall structure and how our new discoveries develop/alter it. The Focus of week two would be to develop the content in fairly strict relation to the structure, defining the narrative and creating new devised material were necessary. I would also focus on specifics of individual characters, their inner journeys and relationships to each other. I believe this is most powerful when developed from the actors and essential in creating audience empathy.
By the final week the structure will be confirmed and we shall work to bring depth, consistency, truth and detail to the piece as we bring it closer to performance level.
Ducktails
Aims For Development Time
The political prisoners in Northern Ireland were divided in prison. The localists in a block on one side of the prison, The Republicans in a block on the other. These blocks were identical. The political prisoners themselves fought for political status and therefore has some input into how these blocks were organized, managed and even decorated.
My project is based on the fascinating difference in how these two groups used their space. From the 4 days research I feel we have come up with a conceptual metaphorical prison environment where we can look at the reality of political prisoners in Northern Ireland without being totally restricted to a lateral retelling of the facts. I want to see how far we can push the story-telling elements and at the same time hold on the fierce loyalty, commitment, passion and fear of the prisoners who fought on both sides of the conflict.
I am keen to find the dramatic balance of the piece, and work out how we can dramatically undercut the weight of the issues with humour and without detracting from the seriousness of the issues we are investigating. We had begun to look at the element but failed to resolve it in 4 days. I also want to lift the stories out of the literal slightly so I can more fully investigate the global issues of prison life, ploitical prisoners and conflict situations.
